*** Omaha took an early lead but couldn't hold it. Chad Allen hit an RBI double and Justin Huber hit a run-scoring single with 2 out in the 1st to make it 2-0 Omaha and Rick Bell homered to lead off the 2nd for his 4th of the season to make it 3-0. Donovan Osborne gave up a solo homer in the 2nd but Omaha got the run back in the 3rd on a Mike Aviles RBI single to make it 4-1. It was almost all Zephyrs from there as New Orleans scored 2 off Osborne in the 4th and 3 in the 5th thanks in part to Aviles' 19th error to take a 6-4 lead. Leo Nunez gave up a 2-out RBI double in the 6th and, after Bell stranded 2 in scoring position in the 8th, the Zephyrs scored twice that inning, including a run on a 2-error play by Jeff Keppinger, to make it 9-4. The Royals loaded the bases with 1 out in the 9th and scored on a Mike Coolbaugh ground out but Huber grounded into a game-ending force out. Omaha is 45-75. Zephyrs LF George Lombard was 4-4 with his 6th homer to move to .317 and 1B Larry Broadway was 3-4 with his 23rd double, 15th homer and 3 RBI (76) to move to .297.

The series continues Saturday night. Pitchers: LH Andy Van Hekken (1-3, 6.14) vs. Zephyrs RH Nelson Figueroa (2-3, 5.04). With 4 errors Friday, Omaha's season total moved to 129, which is 11 more than any other PCL team. The .971 team FP is last in the league. Kerry Robinson and Paul Phillips are still laid up with back and abdomenal injuries, respectively.

*** The Hooks' spell over Wichita continued as they pounded Junior Herndon and Neal Musser for 12 runs to take the second of 4 with the Wranglers. Herndon gave up a 3-run homer in the 1st and 3 RBI singles in the 3rd before getting pulled for Neal Musser. As CC starter Ronnie Martinez cruised through the 5th, Musser gave up a leadoff homer in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-0 Hooks. Wichita loaded the bases to start the 6th and, after Alex Gordon flied out, Billy Butler hit an RBI force out, a wild pitch scored Chris Lubanski, Dee Brown singled home Butler and Mitch Maier doubled home Brown to make it 7-4. The Hooks did the rest of their damage in the 7th with 5 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks off Musser and Juan Cedeno to make it 12-4. Gordon hit his 22nd homer to lead off the 8th but the Wranglers would score no more. Wichita is 27-21 and 4 games up on first. Hooks LF Jorge Cortes was 3-5 with his 7th homer and 4 RBI (44) to move to .307, CF Josh Anderson was 3-6 with his 25th double and 2 RBI (47) to move to .317 and RF Tike Redman was 2-6 to move to .304. Two other Hooks had 3-hit games.

The series continues Saturday night as Billy Buckner tries to right the ship.

*** A bad 3-inning stretch for John Gragg helped the Quakes snap a long losing streak against HD Friday. The game was scoreless going into the top of the 3rd when Gragg gave up 3 straight walks to bring the Quakes' 1st run home and then a sac fly and 3-run homer made it 5-0 RC. Irving Falu singled home a run to get the Mavs a run in the bottom of the 3rd and a Mike Stodolka RBI ground out and an RC error that scored Falu cut the lead to 5-3. Gragg gave up a 2-run homer in the 4th to stretch the lead back to 4 and a Quakes sac fly in the 5th made it 8-3. Wilver Perez led off the Mavs' 5th with his 3rd triple and scored on a James Tomlin single but that was it for High Desert. Gilbert de la Vara gave up a solo homer in the 9th as the Quakes iced a 9-4 win. The Mavs are 22-25. Quakes RF Ben Johnson was 3-4 with 2 HR (14) and 4 RBI (47) to move to .246, SS Sean Rodriguez was 1-4 with his 75th RBI to move to .302 and LF Drew Toussaint was 2-4 with his 11th homer, 2 RBI (34) and 2 RS to move to .242.

Game 2 of the series is Saturday night as the Mavs try to start another win streak against the Quakes. Luis Cota starts for High Desert.

*** Matt Kniginyzky had another great start and the Bees bounced back to even the series with the Chiefs. The Bees loaded the bases with 1 out in the 3rd and a Miguel Vega RBI single and Jeff Howell sac fly made it 2-0 Bees. Kniginyzky dodged bullets until giving up a solo homer in the 6th but a Peoria throwing error allowed Valentino Arce to score an insurance run in the 8th and Rayner Oliveros pitched 2 perfect innings for his 1st save. The Bees are 20-28. Chiefs 2B Ryne Malone was 2-2 to move to .296, 3B Kyle Reynolds was 1-4 with his 7th homer and 27th RBI to move to .236 and LF Jesus Valdez was 1-4 with his 23rd double to move to .305.

Game 3 of the 4-game set is Saturday night. Chris Nicoll takes the mound for Burlington.

*** Two late runs kept the Owlz in command of Idaho Falls in the series opener. Jase Turner cranked a 2-run homer in the 4th to start the scoring and give IF a 2-0 lead. Harold Mozingo gave up an RBI double in the bottom of the 4th to allow Orem to cut the lead in half and Mozingo and Tyler Chambliss allowed 2 runs in the 6th to give Orem a 3-2 lead. O.D. Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI single in the 7th but a double steal attempt later in the inning went wrong as Gonzalez was thrown out at the plate to end the inning. Chambliss gave up an RBI single and walked in a run in the 8th to give Orem a 2-run lead and the Chukars went down in order in the 9th. The Chukars are 6-6 and 2 games back of first. Orem SS Ryan Mount was 2-4 with his 26th RBI, 2 SB (6) and 2 RS to move to .265 and RF Chris Pettit was 1-4 with his 15th double and 28th RBI to move to .314. The Owlz survived 4 errors.

The series with Orem continues Saturday night. No announced pitchers.

*** The Royals put a scare into the Giants in the 9th but couldn't mount a comeback. The Royals made 2 errors in the 1st and the Giants scored to take an early lead. Angelo Morales gave up 4 Giant runs in the 3rd but Manny Juan homered to lead off the Royals 3rd to make it 5-1. Derrick Robinson hit an RBI single in the 5th and Nick Francis had an RBI single in the 6th to cut it to 5-3. Chris Chavez came in to pitch the 7th and gave up 2 runs to the Giants then gave up 2 more in the 8th to make it 9-3. The Royals loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the 9th and Eric Dickson and Jarrod Dyson drew bases-loaded walks before two strikeouts put the Royals down to their last chance. Scott Lucas singled home a run and Francis singled home 2 runs to cut the lead to 9-8 and Jason Taylor drew a walk to load the bases. Unfortunately, Juan struck out to end the game. The Royals are 9-4 and a game back of first. Giants DH Jose Flores was 3-5 with 2 RBI (20) to move to .300, LF Emmanuel Cividanes was 2-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI (12) to move to .303 and 2B Sharlon Schoop was 1-3 with 2 walks to drop to .351.

The Royals were set to play the 7-6 A's Saturday.
