*** Omaha cranked out 7 doubles and never trailed after the 3rd as Kyle Davies had a good first start. The Royals stranded 2 in the 1st but broke through with 3 doubles in the 3rd as Shane Costa led off with one, Mike Aviles drove Costa home with one and Damon Hollins hit a 2-out RBI one to make it 2-0 Omaha. Mike Stodolka hit a 2-out double in the 4th and scored on a Costa single and Memphis error to make it 3-0. Davies took a 1-hitter into the 5th but gave up a 1-out triple and single to cut the lead to 3-1. C Matt Tupman chased Memphis starter John Wasdin with a 2-out double in the 6th and Stodolka greeted RP Ron Flores with an RBI single to get the run back. Aviles scored on a Memphis error in the 7th to make it 5-1 and Costa singled home a run in the 8th for another insurance run. Roberto Giron gave up a run in the 9th but finished it at 6-2. Wasdin took the loss with 5 2/3 IP of 4 R (3 ER) on 8 hits, a walk and 3 Ks to drop to 1-1 with a 3.09 ERA. Memphis 2B Jarrett Hoffpauir was 2-3 with a walk and his 2nd error to move to .393 and Cards top prospect CF Colby Rasmus was 0-4 to drop to .205.

Omaha is 6-2 and 2 1/2 games up on first. The series continues tonight. Probable starters: Omaha lefty Tyler Lumsden (0-0, 5.79) vs. Memphis righty Mitch Boggs (1-0, 0.00). I forgot to note yesterday what prospects are on Memphis' roster. Rasmus (underwhelming .564 OPS) heads the group, along with righty Chris Perez (0-1, 8.10 out of pen), Boggs, and OF Joe Mather (1.192 OPS).

*** A Kila Kaaihue grand slam highlighted a big Naturals 8th after they had blown a 3-run lead. A Missions error scored Jose Duarte in the 1st and NW Arkansas added 2 more runs in the inning on a Kaaihue RBI single and Marc Maddox RBI single to make it 3-0 after 1. Naturals SP Rowdy Hardy continued his struggles at AA with a 2-run San Antonio 2nd on 2 hits, a hit batsman and sac fly. Hardy gave up the tying run in the 5th on a 2-hit, 2-out rally. Ovandy Suero was thrown out at home in the 5th and the Naturals stranded 2 in the 6th. Devon Lowery came in for the 8th after Roman Colon pitched 2 scoreless frames and the Missions took the lead on a run on 2 hits. Jonathan Ellis came in to pitch the 8th for San Antonio and loaded the bases with no outs before Kaaihue slammed a homer to right to make it 7-4 NWA. Former Royal farmhand RP Gabe DeHoyos came in with 2 on and 1 out and Ovandy Suero singled home a run before Angel Sanchez hit a 2-out, 2-run double and Mario Lisson singled Sanchez home to make it 11-4. Lowery pitched a 1-2-3 9th to nail down the win. Ellis picked up his 1st blown save with 1/3 IP of 6 ER on 3 hits and 3 walks to drop to 1-1 with a 10.13 ERA. DeHoyos' ERA ballooned to 10.80 while starter Matt Buschmann took a no-decision with 5 IP of 3 R (1 ER) on 4 hits, a walk and 4 Ks to move his ERA to 2.70. Three Missions had 2-hit games led by LF Chad Huffman, who was 2-4 with his 6th double and 4th RBI to move to .375.

NWA is 3-5 and tied with Tulsa atop the TL North. The series wraps tonight as Naturals SP Dan Cortes (0-0, 2.08) takes on Missions SP Steve Garrison (0-1, 5.40).

*** Everett Teaford and Greg Holland teamed up to stymie the Hillcat bats and the Rocks took the series opener. Teaford stranded 2 in the 1st and started a streak of 14 straight Hillcats retired. Kurt Mertins walked to start the 3rd, stole second and scored on a Brett Bigler single to give the Rocks the lead. With 2 on and no out in the 4th, Joe Dickerson singled home a run to make it 2-0 but the rally died there. Teaford cruised through the 6th and handed the ball to Holland, who stranded 2 in the 9th to lock down the victory. Lynchburg SP Jared Hughes took the loss with 6 IP of 2 ER on 4 hits, 5 BB and 3 Ks to drop to 0-2 with a 3.27 ERA. Hillcats 3B Jim Negrych was 1-3 with a walk to drop to .444. The Rocks hit into 6 DPs in the win to nearly match a Carolina League record, but did set a team record with the twin killings.

The Rocks are 3-5. The series continues tonight. Probable starters: Rocks righty Jason Godin (0-0, 9.82) and Lynchburg righty Michael Crotta (1-0, 4.26).

*** The Bees got some offense going and took the opener from the Loons. The Bees loaded the bases with 1 out in the 1st and Adrian Ortiz scored on a wild pitch but the Bees stranded 2 in the frame. In the 2nd, Jamar Walton led off with a homer for his 1st of the season and Ryan Eigsti followed with a double before an Ortiz sac fly scored him to make it 3-0 Bees. Bees starter Joe Augustine stranded 2 Loons in the 4th but allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, a walk, passed ball and error on David Lough in LF to cut the lead to 3-2. The Bees got the runs back in their half on a wild pitch that scored Alwin Perez and a double steal of second and home by Jason Taylor and Lough, respectively, to make it 5-2. RP Ed Cegarra was nearly perfect for Burlington with only 2 hits allowed and the Bees scored an insurance run in the 8th on an Eigsti sac fly. Cegarra stranded 1 in the 9th for his 1st save. Loons SP Kyle Smit took the loss with 4 2/3 IP of 5 ER on 6 hits, 3 walks and a K to drop to 0-1 with a 4.66 ERA. Two Loons had 2-hit games and LF Andrew Lambo was 1-4 with 2 RBI (8) to move to .355, but was ejected in the 8th.

The Bees are 3-5. The series continues this afternoon as Bees starter Alex Caldera (0-1, 3.38) takes on Loons starter Steven Johnson (0-0, 5.79).
