Omaha took the finale with Tacoma to split a 4-game set. Mike Aviles singled home a run in the 1st and the Royals scored 3 combined in the 4th and 5th on a Richie Lewis RBI single, Joey Gathright RBI double and Justin Huber RBI force out. Tacoma scored once in the 9th off RP Ken Ray to tighten it to 4-3 and Roberto Giron came on with 2 on and 2 out and ended it for his 4th save. Tacoma CF Adam Jones hit his 10th homer and had 2 RBI in moving to .300 and Rainiers starter Jake Woods took the loss with 4 ER on 8 hits and 4 walks with 0 Ks over 5 IP to drop to 2-4 with a 6.26 ERA.

Tyler Lumsden had a good start and Omaha won the opener with the Beavers. The game was scoreless until Lumsden gave up a run in the 5th but Omaha spoiled Portland SP Tim Stauffer's perfect game bid with 3 in the 7th on an RBI double by Craig Brazell and 2-run double by Mitch Maier. John Bale and Neal Musser took care of the rest as Omaha won despite only 3 hits. Stauffer took the loss with 3 runs (1 ER) on 2 hits and a walk with 1 K over 7 IP to drop to 2-2 with a 6.75 ERA.

Omaha won its 4th straight thanks to a 14-hit attack and 5 IP of good relief. A Justin Huber double play ball gave Omaha a 1-0 lead in the 2nd but Portland took the lead with 2 in the 3rd off SP Billy Buckner. Omaha stormed back with 4 in the 4th on a 2-out Portland throwing error that scored Mike Aviles, another error that scored Huber and a 2-run double by Fernando Cortez to make it 5-2. Billy Butler hit a sac fly in the 6th and the Royals added 2 in the 9th on an Aviles RBI double and Huber RBI single. Omaha is 30-27 and 3 1/2 games back. Portland DH Brian Myrow was 2-4 with his 4th double, 4th homer and 2 RBI (19) to move to .265 and SP Jack Cassel took the loss with 6 IP of 6 runs (2 ER) on 10 hits, 2 walks and a K to drop to 4-5 with a 3.21 ERA.

Game 3 of the set is tonight. Probable starters: Omaha RH Jason Shiell (0-2, 3.07) vs. Portland's Clay Hensley (
1-1, 7.30). The Royals had their first winning May since 1999 in going 16-13.

Jarod Plummer blew the save in the 9th and a 4-run Midland 13th got the RockHounds the win in the series opener. Jake Blalock hit an RBI groundout in the 1st and Wichita had a 1-0 lead. Mike Connolly gave up a solo homer in the 5th to tie the game but Wichita moved back ahead in the 7th on an Adam Donachie RBI double. Plummer put the first 2 runners on in the 9th and gave up a 1-out sac fly to tie it at 2. Devon Lowery stranded 2 in the 12th but gave up the lead run on a throwing error in the 13th, walked a run in and gave up a 2-run single to make it 6-2 Midland. Irving Falu singled home a run in the bottom of the inning but the Wranglers couldn't rally. Midland C Landon Powell was 2-6 with his 4th homer and 3 RBI (16) to move to .221 and RP Steven Sharpe got the win with 1 2/3 IP of an UER on 1 hit to move to 3-0 with a 1.37 ERA.

A 3-run 9th off RP Greg Atencio got Midland another late-inning win. Damaso Espino singled home a run in the 2nd to tie the game at 1 and, after Midland took the lead in the 6th, Jeff Eure took a bases-loaded walk in the 7th to re-tie it at 2. Atencio gave up 4 singles in the 9th to help Midland to 3 runs for a 5-2 lead and Sharpe closed the door in the bottom of the inning for his 9th save. Midland SS Gregorio Petit was 3-5 with his 10th double and 24th RBI to move to .323 and RP Dan Denham got the win with 1 1/3 IP of a hit, walk and K to move to 1-1 with a 5.56 ERA.

Wichita's woes continued despite a decent outing from Luke Hochevar. Geraldo Valentin tripled to lead off the Wichita 5th and scored on a Damaso Espino single to make it 1-0. Hochevar allowed a run on a hit and walk in the 6th to tie the game but Wichita regained the lead in the bottom of the inning on a Jake Blalock RBI single. Danny Tamayo finished the 6th for Wichita and gave up the cycle in the 7th as a single, double, triple and homer helped Midland to a 4-2 lead. Wichita didn't threaten after the 6th. Wichita is 22-34 and 7 1/2 games back having lost 12 of its last 13. Midland CF Richie Robnett was 1-4 with his 6th homer and 2 RBI (34) to move to .229 and SP Ben Fritz went 6 2/3 IP for the win with 2 ER on 6 hits, 2 walks and 5 Ks to improve to 6-1 with a 3.50 ERA.

The Wranglers have today off before starting a 4-game set at the Arkansas Travelers (21-33, AA Angels) Tuesday. Wichita is 5-8 versus the Travs thus far. Chris Lubanski has been having problems with a strained hamstring lately and Ed Lucas has been missing time with a sore back.

Salem took its 12th straight win by coming back twice on Wilmington. A Kiel Thibault sac fly in the 2nd gave the Rocks a 1-0 lead and Julio Pimentel kept the Avalanche in check until a run in the 5th tied it at 1. Marc Maddox led off the 6th with a double and scored on a Salem error but Pimentel gave up the tying hit before getting pulled in the bottom of the inning and Yovany D'Amico walked in a run later in the inning to make it 3-2 Salem. The Avalanche added 2 off D'Amico in the 7th and Wilmington wasn't able to slap a rally together. Salem DH Ole Sheldon was 3-3 to move to .317, 3B Billy Hart was 3-4 with 2 RBI (17) to move to .245 and SP Chris Salamida went 6 2/3 IP and allowed 2 ER on 6 hits and a walk with 3 Ks to move to 4-3 with a 2.98 ERA. RP Rory Shortell picked up his 2nd save.

It took extra innings and a big Kila Kaaihue homer but Wilmington snapped Salem's win streak Saturday. Kiel Thibault doubled home a run and Josh Johnson drove another home with a single as the Rocks took a 2-0 lead in the 2nd. A Brett Bigler RBI double in the 4th made it 3-0 as SP Dan Cortes was able to hold the Avalanche quiet before leaving with 1 on and 2 out in the 7th. P Patrick Green promptly gave up an RBI double and then gave up a game-tying 2-run homer in the 8th. Mario Lisson walked with 1 out in the 11th and Kaaihue smacked his 7th homer for a 2-run shot to make it 5-3. Russ Haltiwanger pitched a perfect 11th to pick up his 3rd win. Salem LF Mitch Einertson was 1-5 with his 3rd homer and 2 RBI (35) to move to .317 and RP Ryan McKeller took the loss with 2 ER on 2 hits and a walk to drop to 4-2 with a 3.18 ERA.

Sunday's game was cancelled and will not be made up as the two teams don't play again in the first half, which ends June 17.

Wilmington is 27-27 and 1 game back. The Blue Rocks start a 3-day, 4-game set at home versus the Kinston Indians (33-21, A-Adv. Tribe) tonight. No announced starters. The Rocks are 4-5 versus Kinston thus far. P Rowdy Hardy has been named the Carolina League Pitcher of the Week for May 28 to June 1. C Todd Balduf and P D'Amico have been placed on the DL with a strained quad and strained calf, respectively.

The teams combined for 3 runs, 15 hits and 4 errors in the 13-inning contest as the Bees dropped the finale with Wisconsin. SP Everett Teaford gave up a run on a walk, hit and Chris McConnell error in the 1st but the Bees finally tied it in the 6th on a McConnell solo homer to lead off the inning and mark his 1st of the season. Teaford handed the ball to Tyler Chambliss with 1 on and 2 out in the 7th and Chambliss went the next 5 1/3 innings. The Bees stranded 2 in the 10th and 12th and left the lead run at third in the 13th. Aaron Hartsock came on for the 13th and gave up a walk, single, walk and sac fly to end it. Rattlers 3B Alex Liddi was 2-5 with his 12th error, 10th double and 17th RBI to move to .230 and RP Rollie Gibson got the win with 2 IP of 2 hits and a walk to move to 1-2 with a 5.22 ERA.

The Bees finally played their first game against Cedar Rapids this season and lost a narrow opener of a doubleheader Saturday. SP Mario Santiago put the team behind the 8-ball early with a 2-run homer in the 1st making it 2-0 Kernels. Matt Morizio doubled home a run in the 2nd to cut the lead in half but Santiago gave up another 2-run homer in the 4th to make it 4-1. Jase Turner equaled the feat with a 2-run homer of his own in the 5th for his 4th of the season to cut it to 4-3. The Bees stranded Chris McConnell at second in the inning and wouldn't have another base runner as the Kernels got the win. LF Chris Pettit was 1-2 for the Kernels with his 7th homer and 2 RBI (28) to move to .364, C Hank Conger was 1-3 with his 8th homer and 2 RBI (31) to move to .281 and SP Tim Schoeninger went the distance with 7 IP of 3 ER on 6 hits with 8 Ks to improve to 8-2 with a 2.91 ERA.

Matt Campbell pitched a complete game and a 5th inning rally made the difference. Campbell gave up a run on 2 hits in the 1st but the Bees scored 3 in the 2nd on a 2-run homer by Brady Everett (his 4th) and a Derrick Robinson RBI single. Campbell gave up a 2-out, 2-run double in the 3rd to tie it but Chris McConnell led off the 5th with a triple, scored on a Jeff Bianchi single and a wild pitch scored a Bees run later in the inning to make it 5-3 Bees. Campbell had a perfect 6th and stranded 1 in the 7th for the win. Kernels 1B Mark Trumbo was 2-3 with his 4th error, 10th double and 3 RBI (32) to move to .259 and Kernels starter Doug Brandt took the loss with 4 1/3 IP of 5 runs (4 ER) on 5 hits, 3 walks and 6 Ks to drop to 3-2 with a 1.79 ERA.

Harold Mozingo gave the Bees' bullpen a 2nd straight day off with a complete game 2-hit shutout of the Kernels. Joe Dickerson hit a 2-out RBI single in the 1st as the Bees took a 1-0 lead. Mozingo retired the final 14 Kernels in a row and the Bees added a run in the 5th on a Kernels error. Burlington is 25-30 and 10 games back. LF Chris Pettit was 1-3 for Cedar Rapids to move to .359 and SP Jeremy Haynes went 4 1/3 IP and allowed 2 runs (1 ER) on 4 hits and 4 walks with 1 K to drop to 1-3 with a 4.64 ERA.

The teams play one more twinbill tonight to wrap up the massive series. The Bees' starters will be RH Josh Cribb (1-3, 5.45) in game 1 and newest Bee RH Jim Wladyka in game two. Wladyka (according to team site pronounced WAHD-ick-a) was pitching for the Can-Am League's Atlantic City Surf before KC bought his rights. He spent the last two seasons in the Mets organization as a non-drafted free agent out of St. John's University. At Hagerstown in the South Atlantic League last season, he went 0-1 with a 3.99 ERA in 49.2 innings.
