Omaha gave starter Tyler Lumsden 6 runs of support in the first 3 innings and ran away to win a fourth straight vs. the Redbirds. Angel Berroa doubled home Joey Gathright in the 1st and Craig Brazell singled home Berroa to make it 2-0 but the Royals stranded 2 in the frame. Mike Aviles hit a 2-out, 3-run homer in the 2nd for his 9th of the season as Omaha made it 5-0 before Memphis tallied a run off Lumsden in the 3rd. Lumsden stranded 2 that inning and Omaha got the run back on a Gathright RBI single to knock SP Chris Narveson out of the game but left the bases full in the 3rd. Memphis scored a run in the 4th to cut it to 6-2 but Shane Costa led off the Omaha 5th with his 2nd homer for the Royals to make it 7-2. The Royals added 2 more runs in the 6th on back-to-back homers by Berroa (his 4th) and Aviles (his 10th and 2nd on the day) to take command at 9-2 and Nate Hoelscher gave up a meaningless run in the 9th before closing it out. Six Redbirds had 1 hit each and Narveson took the loss with 2 2/3 IP of 6 ER on 9 hits and 2 walks to drop to 3-2 with a 6.53 ERA.

Omaha is 48-53. The series goes to game 3 this afternoon. Starters: Memphis RH Blake Hawksworth (3-10, 4.81) vs. Omaha RH Matt Wright (6-3, 3.86). IF Fernando Cortez has been added to Omaha's roster but is on the DL for an undisclosed reason.

Wichita took an early 4-1 lead but it fell apart in the middle innings as Springfield dropped the Wranglers to their 5th straight loss. Adam Greenberg started off the game right for Wichita with his 5th homer and, after SP Greg Atencio stranded the bases full of Cardinals in the 1st, Greenberg came through with a 2-run double in his second AB to make it 3-0 in the 2nd. Atencio gave up a leadoff homer to LF Mark Shorey in the 2nd but Wichita got an RBI double from Jorge Padilla in the 3rd to make the score 4-1. The Cardinals pulled within a run in the 5th as Atencio allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and a wild pitch but stranded 2 to salvage the lead. Springfield took the lead in the 6th with 3 runs on 2 walks and a 2-run single off Atencio and 2 hits and a run off RP Tim Bausher. Bausher and Jason Cromer allowed 2 runs on 4 hits in the 8th and Wichita failed to score after the 3rd in the loss. Springfield C Bryan Anderson was 4-5 with his 10th double and 3 RBI (36) to move to .326, SS Jose Martinez was 3-4 with his 5th double and 3 RBI (19) to move to .280 and SP Adam Daniels got the win with 6 1/3 IP of 4 ER on 9 hits, 2 walks and 3 Ks to improve to 4-3 with a 4.01 ERA.

Wichita is 10-19 and 9 games back. The series concludes tonight as the Cards try for a sweep. Probable starters: Wichita righty Carlos Rosa (3-6, 5.48) vs. Cards righty Mitch Boggs (9-4, 3.51).

The Rocks' offense turned on for 2 innings and it was enough to help Julio Pimentel to the win. Pimentel dodged trouble in the 2nd but gave up a run in the 3rd on a Brad McCann error and a single. Hillcats SP Serguey Linares 1-hit the Rocks over the first 4 innings but got dinged in the 5th as Brian McFall led off the inning with his 6th homer and, with 2 out, Brett Bigler and Chris McConnell hit back-to-back doubles to give Wilmington a 2-1 lead. McCann singled home a run in the 6th to make it 3-1. Pimentel allowed a run on 2 hits in the 6th to trim the lead back to 1 but, along with Justin Barnes, pitched 3 perfect innings thereafter to wrap it up. Lynchburg 2B Shelby Ford was 2-4 with his 24th double, 53rd RBI and 5th error to move to .278 and Linares took the loss with 5 IP of 2 ER on 4 hits, a walk and 4 Ks to drop to 1-5 with a 4.76 ERA.

Wilmington is 18-10 and 2 games up on first. The series concludes tonight. Probable starters: Rocks right-hander Tyler Chambliss (2-1, 5.68) vs. Hillcats southpaw Kyle Bloom (7-6, 4.42).

The Bees pen got shelled for 7 runs as the Whitecaps made Blake Wood's first A-ball start a poor one. West Michigan scored a run on 2 doubles and a walk off Wood in the 1st but the Bees hung in with a run on a Brady Everett sac fly to make it 1-1 going into the 2nd. Wood allowed a solo homer in the 3rd and a 2-run homer in the 4th to make it 4-1 and Whitecaps SP Charles Furbush retired 13 of 15 before leaving after 5 IP. The Whitecaps poured it on with 5 runs in the 7th off Josh Cribb and Aaron Hartsock and Hartsock gave up a 2-run homer in the 8th to make it 11-1. Joe Dickerson singled home a run in the 8th but the next 4 batters went down to end the game. Whitecaps 1B Ryan Strieby was 3-4 with 2 HR (10) and 4 RBI (53) and his 4th E to move to .265, RF Brennan Boesch was 2-5 with his 14th double, 7th HR and 4 RBI (66) to move to .286 and Furbush got the win with 5 IP of an ER on 3 hits, a walk and 5 Ks to improve to 1-0 with a 1.80 ERA. RP Casey Fien picked up his 5th save (the 4-inning variety).

Burlington is 15-13 and 3 games back. Game 2 is today. Starters: Bees RH Ed Cegarra (1-1, 3.54) vs. Whitecaps RH Jonah Nickerson (7-6, 4.53).

The Chukars couldn't recover from 3 early Helena runs to drop a sixth straight game. IF left 2 in scoring position in the 1st and the Brewers answered with 2 runs on a walk, double and Clint Robinson error off SP Clegg Snipes. The Brewers added a run in the 2nd on 3 hits and a walk as O.D. Gonzalez nailed 2 runners trying to score in the inning. Ryan Eigsti scored the Chukars' first run in the 4th on a Helena error but IF stranded 2. They cut the lead to 1 in the 5th on a Robinson RBI single but once again left 2 in scoring position. Helena got the run back off Snipes in the bottom of the inning but RP Chris Denton stranded the bases full. Alvi Morel singled home a run in the 6th but, as was the trend, the Chukars stranded 2 more. They left the tying run at third in the 8th and at second in the 9th as RP Corey Frerichs got his 1st save. Brewers SS Matt Cline was 2-3 with his 4th RBI to move to .322 and SP Roque Mercedes picked up the win with 5 IP of 2 R (1 ER) on 6 hits, 2 walks and 5 Ks to move to 3-1 with a 3.20 ERA.

IF is 19-12 and 5 games up on first. The series ends late this afternoon. No announced starters on the team site. IF Fernando Garcia (turns 19 Saturday) has been added to the Chukars' roster.
