Yarnall 2 2/3 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, BB, 3 K -- SV, 1, 3.79 ERA
*** Runelvys Hernandez had his best start of the season at Omaha and the Royals snapped a losing skid. With 1 out and runners on the corners in the 2nd, Buddy's son Rick Bell came through with a bases-clearing triple to put Omaha up, 2-0. Blanco followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0. Runelvys had a no-hitter through 5 1/3 innings before a single broke it up. Bell hit an RBI single in the 4th to extend the lead but was thrown out trying to stretch it to a double. Runelvys gave up a 1-out double and single in the 7th and was pulled for Yarnall, who got out of the jam unscathed. Robinson doubled home Blanco in the 9th for some more padding on the lead before Yarnall gave up 2 in the bottom of the 9th but salvaged a save. Omaha is 26-39. Sounds SP Dana Eveland was tagged with his 2nd loss with 4 ER over 6 IP to move his ERA to 1.93. Braun 2 1/3 IP, H, 2 K -- SV, 9, 1.73 ERA, old school save
*** The Wranglers almost squandered a 5-1 lead but Braun held the line on the mound to secure the win. Both teams' offenses were quiet until the 4th when Wichita scored 3 on a Tupman RBI ground out, a sac fly by 1B Kila Kaaihue and Maier RBI single. Middleton gave up a leadoff homer in the Tulsa 4th but Wichita got that back and 1 more in the 7th on an RBI single by LF Dee Brown and Tupman RBI force out for a 5-1 lead. RP Devon Lowery replaced Middleton to start the 7th and got into trouble as he loaded the bases with 1 out. A 2-run single and sac fly cut the lead to 5-4 and brought in RP Nate Hoelscher, who gave up a single before being pulled in favor of Braun. Braun got a force out to end the inning with the slim Wrangler lead. Tulsa got 2 on with 0 out in the 8th but Braun got a pop out, strike out and force out to end the threat. He had a 1-2-3 9th to shut the door. Wichita is 32-33 and 6 games back of first. *** Three big innings helped the Mavs rout Rancho Cucamonga and creep closer in the divisional race as the first half dwindles. A Donachie sac fly, RBI triple by Valentin and McFall sac fly got High Desert on the board for 3 in the 2nd and, after the Quakes got 1 back in the 4th, the Mavs came up and got a Valentin RBI double and 3-run homer by McFall -- his 9th -- for a 7-1 lead. That was the score entering the bottom of the 7th when the Mavs started the inning with 5 straight hits, including RBI singles by SS Irving Falu, Brown and Stodolka. Donachie hit an RBI single before Valentin drew a bases-loaded walk, McFall drove in a run with a double-play ball and 3B Ed Lucas reached on a throwing error that scored a run. A Donachie single drove in the 15th run in the 8th and the Quakes scored 2 in the 9th but it was, for all intents and purposes, over. High Desert is 34-31 and 1 1/2 games back of Inland Empire with 5 games left in the first half. The Quakes committed 5 errors in the loss but only 4 of the runs were unearned. Quakes 3B Freddy Sandoval was 3-5 with 2 RBI to move to .303, C Michael Collins was 2-4 to move to .303 and 1B Cliff Remole was 1-4 to drop to .297.
