*** Two gaffes by Omaha C Jared Price helped the Sounds to the 5-2 win as Brian Boehringer took a tough loss and Nashville got good pitching from Ben Hendrickson. Huber hit an RBI single in the 1st to get Omaha on top early but Sounds CF Tony Gwynn Jr. led off their 1st inning with a triple and scored on a passed ball to tie the game. A Price throwing error on a steal of second in the 4th helped Nashville to its second run and a Boehringer throwing error on a pickoff attempt followed by an RBI double in the 5th helped the Sounds add a third run. Clapinski hit a 1-out double in the 7th and advanced to third on a passed ball before a Gotay ground out brought him home to cut the Sound lead to 1. Unfortunately for Omaha, Nashville got some insurance off Hudson in the 8th with back-to-back RBI doubles. Omaha is 26-40. Hendrickson allowed 1 ER over 6 IP in improving to 4-2 with a 2.21 ERA. Gwynn was 2-4 with 2 RS to improve to .318, DH Nelson Cruz was 2-3 with his 49th RBI and 14th SB in moving to .306 and SS Chris Barnwell was 1-3 to put his BA at .327.

The teams polish the series off Thursday night. Starters: LH J.P. Howell (3-2, 5.34) vs. Nashville RH Rick Helling (0-0, 7.20).

*** Tulsa starter Ubaldo Jimenez 1-hit the Wranglers over 6 IP and Wichita only had 2 other hits in losing the finale with the Drillers. Tulsa got a solo homer off Song in the 1st and 2 sac flies in the 2nd to jump ahead, 3-0, and Wichita got runners to second and third with 1 out and without a hit in the 2nd but couldn't get a run. Wranglers LF Dee Brown singled with 1 out in the 6th to break up the no-hitter and Lubanski and Butler added singles in the 7th and 8th, respectively. Cedeno balked home a run in the 8th to account for Tulsa's other run. Wichita is 32-34 and 7 games back of first. Jimenez walked 3 and K'd 6 over 6 IP in improving to 8-2 with a 2.63 ERA. LF Valentin 3-4, BB, HR (5), 2 RBI (31), K, 2 RS, E (5) -- .290

Plummer 3 IP, 2 R (1 ER), 4 H, BB, 5 K -- BS, 3, W, 8-2, 5.40 ERA
DeHoyos IP, 2 K -- SV, 12, 1.40 ERA

*** The Mavericks staved off the Quakes to win their 5th straight. A Valentin RBI single and Stodolka RBI ground out in the 1st gave the Mavs an early lead but the Quakes scored a run in each of the 3rd, 4th and 5th frames to take the lead. It was short-lived as Valentin hit a solo homer for his 5th of '06 in the 5th and, after a Stodolka double, Brown tripled to bring another run home and give the Mavs back the lead. Plummer came in to pitch the 6th and allowed a 1-out RBI double to tie the game once more but High Desert took its third lead in the bottom of the 6th on a bases-loaded walk by Valentin. A throwing error by Quakes SS Sean Rodriguez in the 7th helped Brown score and High Desert was up 2 at 6-4. Valentin muffed a catch in the 8th that allowed a run to come home for Cucamonga and Plummer got out of a 2-on, 1-out jam to maintain a 1-run lead. DeHoyos set the Quakes down 1-2-3 in the 9th to pick up his 12th save. High Desert is 35-31 and 1 1/2 games back of first with 4 games left in the half. Rodriguez was 4-5 for RC with his 11th homer and 36th RBI but the crucial error meant more as his BA rose to .291, CF Josh Leblanc was 3-4 with 2 RS to move to .252 and 3B Freddy Sandoval was 2-5 to move to .306.

The teams wrap up the set in Adelanto Thursday night. Pitchers: RH Luis Cota vs. Quakes RH Francisco Rodriguez. In other news,
Cota was named the California League's pitcher of the week after rolling for an active 17.1 scoreless inning streak. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 20.1 frames. Hope I didn't jinx him, so all you readers knock on wood.
