Luke Hochevar didn't get into big trouble until the 7th and took a no-decision as Memphis scored 6 late runs to even the series. Omaha stranded 2 in the 1st and Hochevar gave up a run on 2 hits in the 2nd to give the Redbirds a 1-0 lead. Hochevar retired 11 straight and Omaha took the lead in the 5th on a 2-out, 2-run homer by Mitch Maier for his 9th of the season. Derek Wathan singled home a run in the 6th to make it 3-1 but Hochevar allowed a run in the Memphis 6th to cut the lead back to 1 at 3-2. Mike Aviles singled in a run and Justin Huber hit a 2-out RBI double in the 7th as the Royals made it 5-2. Hochevar got the first 2 outs quickly in the bottom of the 7th but then allowed 2 singles before handing the reins to Ken Ray. Ray walked a batter to load the bases and then gave up a 3-run double to CF Skip Schumaker to tie the game. A wild pitch and an RBI single gave the Redbirds the lead at 6-5 before Ray escaped the inning. Ray allowed another run in the 8th and a double play helped kill the Royals' chances in the 9th as Chris Perez got his 3rd AAA save. Schumaker was 1-4 with his 9th double and 4 RBI (20) to move to .295 and RP Kelvin Jimenez got the win with 2/3 IP of an ER on 2 hits to move to 2-3 with a 2.89 ERA.

Omaha is 60-61. Game 3 of the set is this afternoon. Probable starters: Omaha LH Tyler Lumsden (7-5, 6.32) vs. Memphis RH Blake Hawksworth (3-12, 5.49). A silent auction for Mike Coolbaugh's memorial fund raised $5,800 Saturday in KC. Omaha plans a silent auction for the same cause next weekend.

John Thomson got blitzed in the 2nd and Wichita didn't recover. Home runs were the weapon of choice for the Wranglers in the game as Jorge Padilla got the scoring started with a leadoff homer in the 2nd for his 8th for Wichita. Thomson pitched a 1-2-3 1st but gave up a leadoff homer in the 2nd, then a single, double and 3-run homer, then 2 outs and a solo homer to put Wichita down, 5-1. Mike Stodolka led off the 4th with his 12th homer but Dusty Hughes gave the run back with interest in the bottom of the inning as 2 runs scored on 3 hits and a steal of home by 3B Adam Fox. The Wranglers loaded the bases in the 7th but couldn't score. Adam Donachie hit his 8th homer in the 9th but that was as close as Wichita would get. Frisco catching prospect Taylor Teagarden was 3-3 with his 3rd double and 2 RS to move to .410, 1B Emerson Frostad was 1-3 with his 10th homer and 3 RBI (38) to move to .246 and SP Michael Schlact got the win with 6 1/3 IP of 2 ER on 7 hits and 5 Ks to improve to 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA.

Wichita is 18-29 and 7 games back. The series continues today. Probable starter for Wichita is lefty Mike Connolly (4-5, 5.30). Ps John Foster and Justin Barnes have joined the Wichita roster from the AZL and Wilmington, respectively.

Wilmington had only 4 hits in the game and the Keys rallied in the 11th for the win. The Rocks stranded 2 in the 2nd but took the lead in the 3rd on a Mario Lisson RBI ground out. Julio Pimentel had a good start as he handed a shutout to the bullpen in the 6th but David Humen allowed the tying run to score in the 7th on 2 hits and 2 wild pitches. RP Arthur Santos loaded the bases with 1 out in the 10th but got a double play to escape the jam. Wilmington stranded the winning run at third in the 10th and RP Yovany D'Amico had 1 on with 2 out in the 11th when he gave up 2 singles and a 2-run triple. The Rocks went down in order in the 11th and had only 1 hit after the 3rd. Keys SS Blake Davis was 3-5 with his 2nd triple and 2 RBI (18) with his 17th error to move to .284 and RP Carlos Perez got the win with 1 1/3 IP of 3 K to improve to 8-7 with a 3.92 ERA.

Wilmington is 29-18 and 5 games up on first. The Rocks are trying to avoid the sweep today. Starters: Rocks right-hander Blake Johnson (5-6, 3.77) vs. Keys righty David Hernandez (6-9, 5.08).

The Bees took the lead in the 6th and held on to win the opener versus the Dragons. Starter Dan Gutierrez gave up a run on 2 walks and a hit in the 1st but the Bees tied it in their half on a Jamar Walton RBI ground out before stranding 2. Luis Castillo scored on a Derrick Robinson force out in the 2nd and Jeff Bianchi singled home a run to give the Bees a 3-1 lead. Gutierrez allowed 2 runs in the 3rd on 3 hits but Jamar Walton helped nail a runner at second to end the rally. Gutierrez stranded 2 in the 4th and Josh Cribb gave up the go-ahead run on 2 doubles in the 6th. Walton led off the Bees 6th with a double and Kurt Mertins singled him home before a 2-out Luis Castillo RBI double made it 5-4. Castillo struck again in the 8th with a 2-out RBI single to make it 6-4 and Angelo Morales stranded a runner at third in the 9th for his 1st save. Dragons LF Carson Kainer was 2-4 with his 7th double and 2 RBI (15) to move to .266 and RP Dan Donaldson took the loss with 3 IP of 2 ER on 3 hits, a walk and 4 Ks to drop to 0-1 with a 5.23 ERA.

Burlington is 24-23 and 5 games back. Game 2 of the set is under way. Blake Wood started for the Bees. Mario Santiago was named MWL Pitcher of the Week for the week ending Aug. 4. He was 2-0 with a 0.66 ERA over 13 2/3 IP on the week.

The Chukar offense sputtered and Billings ran away with the win. Starter Zach Peterson gave up a run on 2 hits in the 1st and, after the Chukars left a runner at third in the 3rd, Peterson stranded the bases loaded in the Billings 3rd. Peterson gave up 3 runs on a single, double and 2-run homer in the 4th and was pulled with 2 out and the bases loaded. Burke Baldwin walked in a run and gave up a single that scored 2 runs thanks to an O.D. Gonzalez error in right. Baldwin gave up 2 runs in the 6th on a homer, triple and sac fly to make it 9-0 Mustangs. IF broke up the shutout in the 7th with 2 runs on an Anthony Seratelli RBI double and a Joe Billick sac fly. IF left 2 in scoring position in the 8th and went down in order in the 9th. Mustangs RF Mike Jones was 3-4 with his 3rd SB, 3rd HR and 4 RBI (15) to move to .285 and SP Enerio Del Rosario got the win with 6 IP of 2 hits and 2 Ks to improve to 4-2 with a 3.96 ERA.

IF is 8-4 and a game up on first. The series ends this afternoon. Probable starters: IF's Clegg Snipes (1-3, 4.46) vs. Billings' Scott Carroll (no record yet).

Danville jumped all over two Royals pitchers to extend the division lead. Starter Bryan Paukovits gave up 3 singles, a walk, sac fly and another single off the bat in the 1st to give the Braves a 3-0 lead. Paukovits allowed another run in the 2nd on a walk, single and 2 wild pitches before allowing yet another run in the 3rd on a double, wild pitch and passed ball to make it 5-0 Braves. Jake Lane singled in a run in the 4th but the Royals stranded 2 and P David Bernat gave the run back on 2 hits and a sac fly in the bottom of the inning. Bernat gave up 3 more runs in the 5th on a walk and 3 hits to make it 9-1. Brett Amyx hit his 3rd homer in the 6th to cut it to 9-2 but Burlington didn't threaten again. Braves C Ben Johnson was 2-3 with 2 RBI (7) to move to .298 and SP Jose Ortegano got the win with 6 IP of 2 ER on 6 hits and 3 Ks to improve to 5-0 with a 1.27 ERA.

Burlington is 27-22 and 9 games back. A 2-game set at the Kingsport Mets (26-22) starts tonight. The Royals are 3-3 versus the Mets.

The Royals got pounded by the Giants. The Giants scored 3 in the 3rd off SP Mitch Hodge and 4 in the 4th off Hodge and Luis Toribio. The Royals' only run came in the 4th on a Fernando Cruz sac fly. Onassis Sirrett gave up 2 runs in the 5th and another run in the 7th to finish the scoring. Giants LF Casey Bond was 2-4 with his 3rd triple, 3rd homer and 4 RBI (21) to move to .283 and SP Wilber Bucardo got the win with 6 IP of an ER on 5 hits, a walk and 2 Ks to improve to 3-2 with a 2.18 ERA.

The Royals are 9-4 and a game up on first. They play the 5-6 A's tonight.
