Royals on the Farm 8/20

AAA -- Omaha: rainout

The game is being made up today as part of a doubleheader. Game 1 is underway with Isotopes RH Kenny Baugh (6-7, 7.08) going versus Royals RH Brandon Duckworth (0-1, 22.50). Duckworth's struggles continued as the Royals are down, 8-4, in the 5th. Game 2's probable starters are former Royal RH Wes Obermueller (2-1, 3.35) vs. Omaha RH John Thomson (no AAA stats for KC yet).

The Wranglers bullpen held on to a lead to lock down the sweep. Wichita struck for 3 runs in the 1st on RBI singles by Jorge Padilla and Mike Stodolka and an RBI double by Jeff Nettles. Starter Carlos Rosa stranded 2 RoughRiders in the 2nd and Wichita added to its lead in the 3rd with a Kila Kaaihue RBI double to make it 4-0. Rosa gave up a 2-run homer in the 4th but was pulled before qualifying for the victory in the 5th. Nettles singled home a run in the bottom of the inning but John Foster allowed a run in the 6th. Stodolka hit an RBI double in the 7th and scored on a wild pitch to give Wichita a 7-3 lead. Jarod Plummer allowed a solo homer in the 8th and Gabe DeHoyos allowed a run in the 9th before stranding the tying run at first for his 4th save. Frisco DH Taylor Teagarden was 2-4 with his 3rd homer and 2 RBI (9) to move to .348 and SP Doug Mathis took the loss with 6 IP of 5 ER on 9 hits, a walk and 3 Ks to fall to 9-7 with a 4.15 ERA.

Wichita is 24-31 and 5 games back. They have today off.

A-Adv. -- Wilmington: off day

The Blue Rocks start a 3-game home set versus the Myrtle Beach Pelicans (27-29, A-Adv. Braves) tonight. They are 6-11 versus the Pelicans. Probable starters:
Wilmington right-hander Michael Penn (3-2, 3.64) vs. Pelicans righty Deunte Heath (2-2, 3.80). George Brett's appearance in Wilmington has been cancelled due to weather complications.

The Kernels had half of Burlington's hits but got the win as the Bees couldn't piece together any runs. The Bees stranded 2 in the 2nd and the game was scoreless into the 6th before SP Jason Godin gave up a leadoff double, a steal of third and then a run-scoring wild pitch. The Bees loaded the bases with 1 out in the 8th but couldn't capitalize before RP Warner Madrigal pitched a perfect 9th for his 17th save for the Kernels. Starter Blake Holler got the win with 7 IP of 4 hits, a walk and 3 Ks to improve to 3-3 with a 3.41 ERA.

Burlington is 27-28 and 8 1/2 games back. The series continues tonight. Probable starters: Bees RH Mario Santiago (5-8, 3.50) vs. Kernels RH Sean O'Sullivan (9-6, 2.31).

Clint Robinson continued to shine as the best '07 Royals draftee hitter thus far with a big blast in the 9th to get the win for Idaho Falls. Starter Chris Chavez served up a solo homer in the 1st but Idaho Falls took the lead in the 3rd with 2 runs on a 2-out 2-run triple by Wilson Tucker. The Chukars turned on the 2-out magic again in the 4th as Anthony Seratelli hit a solo homer for his 8th of the season and Zach Evangelho and Joe Billick hit back-to-back doubles to make it 4-1 IF. Chavez couldn't hold the lead as Billings scored 3 in the 5th on 3 hits and a hit batsman before Dane Secott got the Chukars out of the inning. With 2 outs in the 5th, Idaho Falls got 2 walks and then a 2-run single from Robinson to take a 6-4 lead. IF left the bases loaded in the 7th and Greg Holland came in to take the mound in the 8th. He gave up 3 runs on 3 hits, a walk and an O.D. Gonzalez error to give the Mustangs a 7-6 lead. Scott Gaffney came in to pitch the 9th for Billings and gave up a walk and single before Robinson mashed a 3-run walkoff homer to center for his 13th pro longball. Billings RF Brett Bartles was 2-5 with his 6th double, 5th homer and 2 RBI (25) to move to .331 and Gaffney got the loss without recording an out as he allowed 3 ER on 2 hits and a walk to fall to 1-1 with a 7.27 ERA.

IF is 13-8 and a game up on first. The series continues tonight as IF SP Zach Peterson (4-3, 3.73) takes on Mustangs SP Andrew Bowman (0-3, 6.30).

The Royals exploded in the 8th to get a nice comeback win. Alwin Perez hit a sac fly in the 1st to give the Royals a 1-0 lead but SP Eduardo Paulino balked in a run in the 1st to tie the game before leaving 2 in scoring position. The Royals regained the lead with a 2-run 3rd on an RBI single by Perez and an Astros error that scored Jake Lane. Paulino allowed a run in the 4th but was pulled with 2 on and 1 out in the 5th in favor of Bobby Hastry. Hastry allowed a single that scored 3 runs thanks to an error by C Adam Beacham to make it 5-3 Greeneville. Another Royal error was part of a 2-run Astros 6th as they made it 7-3. The Royals regained the lead for good with 6 runs in the 8th on a Yeldrys Molina RBI force out, a run-scoring error, a run-scoring wild pitch, a 2-run Lane single and a Perez RBI double. RP Jose Diaz got a double play to end the game in the 9th for his 1st save. Astros RF Andrew Darnell was 1-4 with 2 RBI (15) to move to .226 and RP Brett Robinson took the loss with 1 1/3 IP of 3 UER on 3 hits to drop to 1-2 with a 3.62 ERA.

Burlington is 32-28 and out of the race. The series wraps tonight with no announced starters on the team site. It's Burlington's last road game of the season.
