Royals on the Farm 7/30

One-time Pipeline mainstay Mike Aviles is no longer a Royal, as he was shipped up to Boston (I hear bagpipes) for IF Yamaico Navarro and advanced-A RP Kendal Volz. Navarro will stay with KC and Volz will go to Wilmington. I think it was a good deal. Per the team site story, tho, that may be KC's only deadline trade. I was hoping they'd make room for Giavotella.

* A RedHawks miscue helped Omaha win the series opener. An OKC error scored a run in the 1st and a Clint Robinson RBI groundout made it 2-0 Chasers. Robinson singled home another run in the 3rd with Kila Ka'aihue doing the same to make it 4-0 for Vin Mazzaro. Mazzaro walked the bases loaded but escaped the jam in the 3rd. He walked 2 more in the 4th and had 2 out and 2 on when an RBI single scored a run and yet another walk loaded the bases and resulted in Mazzaro's ejection. Zach Miner made the unexpected entry into the game and gave up a 3-run game-tying double before ending the inning. The Chasers drew 2 1-out walks in the 7th and a David Lough single scored a run on a RedHawk error. Kelvin Herrera came in to strand 2 in the 7th and Jesse Chavez pitched two solid innings to finish it. Omaha is 58-49. Game 2 is Sunday. Mike Montgomery will start.

Rookie - Idaho Falls: Chukars 8, Ogden 4 (Fri.)

3B Threlkeld 3-4, 3B (2), 2 RBI (15), E (8) -- .265, it's a little Berman-y, but how about "My Life With the (Threlkeld) Cult" for a nickname, huh? Yeah, it references an industrial metal band, but it works.
LF Elder 2-4, BB, 2B (4), HR, 2 RBI (7), 2 RS, assist at second -- .333, first pro homer
1B Espy 2-4, BB, 3B, RBI (21), 3 RS -- .312, Eazy Es at it again, tho Escobar didn't play

* The Chukars scored 4 late runs to defeat the Raptors. Ogden scored 2 in the 1st off Willian Avinazar but the Chukars got 1 back on a Mark Threlkeld RBI single. Avinazar grooved one for a solo homer in the 2nd but the offense picked him up in the 3rd with 3 runs on a Richard Espy RBI single, Threlkeld RBI single and Runey Davis sac fly. Jonathan Dooley allowed the tying run in the 7th thanks in part to a Threlkeld error, but Chris Elder picked a fine time for his 1st pro homer as his 2-run shot and an Espy triple followed by a balk made it 7-4 Chukars. Tyler Chism tacked on an RBI single in the 8th and Spencer Patton stranded 2 in the 9th for his 1st pro save. IF is 16-21. The Chukars lead late again tonight.

Rookie - Burlington: suspended

* The game was suspended in the 1st and the teams will play a doubleheader on Sunday.

Rookie - AZL: Mariners 5, Royals 4

2B Garcia 2-3, BB, K, RS, SB (7), E (12) -- .270
RF DelGuidice 1-3, HR (4), 3 RBI (21), K, RS -- .417

Runion 2 IP, BB, 4 K -- 1.17 ERA
Edelbrock 2 IP, 5 R (4 ER), 5 H, BB -- L, 0-1, 18.00 ERA, rocky pro debut

* A pitcher's duel became a late slugfest with the Mariners emerging triumphant. The Mariners stranded 2 twice and the Royals straggled a few runners along as the game stayed tied at 0 into the 8th. Casey Edelbrock made his pro debut for the Royals in the 8th and three straight doubles gave the M's a foothold on the lead. When the dust settled, the Mariners had scored 5 runs and only an assist by Terrance Gore to throw out a runner at second ended the rally. The Royals made a torrid comeback in the 9th as Brian Gaylord hit an RBI forceout and Nick DelGuidice hit a 2-out, 3-run homer for his 4th as a pro. Travis Lane followed with a double but Jerrell Allen grounded out to end the game. The Royals are 12-20.
