* A disastrous 8-run 8th helped the Cubs take down the Chasers on Wednesday. Mike Aviles hit a sac fly in the 1st, then came back up in the 4th and went solo for his 2nd homer to make it 2-0 Omaha. Iowa got on the board against Mario Santiago in the 5th, and he was pulled after a leadoff single in the 8th with the 2-1 lead intact. Jeremy Jeffress entered the game and it didn't go well. Two 1-out singles gave Iowa the lead, a bases loaded walk extended it, and a grand slam by 2B Bobby Scales blew the game open. Bryan LaHair followed with his 18th homer to chase Jeffress from the game after notching only 1 out. Aviles hit a 2-run homer in the 8th for his 3rd of the season and 2nd of the game. Lorenzo Cain went solo in the 9th for his 7th of the season but it was too little, too late. Four Cubs had 2 hits as LaHair had 2 RBI (52). Scales walked 3 times and drove in 4 runs (39) with the slam. Omaha is 36-30. The series ends Thursday as Jeff Suppan starts.

* The Naturals rode a strong Chris Dwyer start to a shutout victory over the Drillers. Tim Smith hit an RBI forceout in the 1st and Dwyer worked around 2 singles to start the 4th to keep the 1-0 lead intact. Jamie Romak hit a 2-run bomb for his 8th of the season in the 4th and Dwyer had to work out of a 2-on, 0-out situation again in the 5th. Dwyer stranded 2 more in the 6th and handed the ball off to the pen thereafter. NWA stranded 2 in the 7th and Kelvin Herrera left two Drillers in scoring position in the 8th. Salvador Perez led off the NWA 8th with his 4th homer to make it 4-0. Herrera took it from there. CF Tim Wheeler had 3 hits and 2B Erik Wetzel had 2 hits for the Naturals. NWA is 31-30. A 4-game home set with the Springfield Cardinals (29-34) starts Thursday. Buddy Baumann starts the opener. Only 6 games remain in the first half with the Nats currently 1 1/2 games back of Arkansas.

* The Rocks staged an 8th inning comeback to take the finale with Lynchburg to wrap up their last first-half road trip. A Hillcats error scored the Rocks' first run in the 1st but Tim Melville allowed a run on a sac fly in the bottom of the inning. Joey Lewis hit a sac fly to make it 2-1 Rocks in the 2nd, but Melville allowed a run in the 3rd on 2 hits. The game stayed knotted at 2 into the 7th, when a Dusty Odenbach wild pitch scored the go-ahead run for Lynchburg. The lead was short-lived as John Whittleman led off the 8th with his 7th homer and Alex McClure drove in the eventual game-winner on a 1-out single. Odenbach worked around 2 singles to start the Hillcat 8th but Ryan Dennick pitched a perfect 9th for his 3rd save. 1B Joe Terdoslavich and CF L.V. Ware had 2 hits for the Hillcats. Wilmington is 34-31. A 4-game home set with the Winston-Salem Dash (30-36, A-Adv. ChiSox) starts Thursday. Noel Arguelles and Tyler Sample will tagteam the opener.

* Kane County tallied 4 in the 1st but it was all Bees thereafter. Ryan Stovall ripped a 2-run homer for his 5th of the season in the 1st and Geulin Beltre hit a 2-run double to make it 4-0 after half an inning. Sugar Ray Marimon threw a run-scoring wild pitch in the 1st then was battered for 3 runs in the 3rd to tie the game. KC stranded 2 in the 5th and Burlington took command with 4 in the bottom of the inning on 2 2-run homers off Santiago Garrido and Allen Caldwell. Double plays helped keep the Cougars off the board in the late innings. RF Royce Consigli and 1B A.J. Kirby-Jones had 4 hits for the Bees as both hit their 4th homer and drove in 2 runs. LF Doug Landaeta also had 2 hits with his 6th homer and 2 RBI. Consigli stole 2 bases. Kane County is 27-38. The series wraps Thursday with Leondy Perez making the start.
