Royals on the Farm 8/6 -- Volz gets first Rocks win

* Jake Odorizzi had a rough night on NWA's side and, on the other side, Arkansas SP Eddie McKiernan was one pitch away from a 1-hit shutout. Odorizzi got tagged for 3 runs in the 1st and Jeff Bianchi hit a solo homer in the bottom of the 1st for his 2nd of the season. McKiernan went on to retire 10 straight, allowed an Anthony Seratelli single, then retired the last 15. Odorizzi allowed a run in the 1st and then combined with Brendan Lafferty to allow 4 runs in the 5th. Arkansas scored an insurance run in the 6th. NWA is 22-20. Game 3 is Sunday with Mario Santiago starting.

* Three late runs gave the Rocks and RP Kendal Volz the win on Saturday. The Rocks loaded the bases with 0 out in the 1st but only got 1 run on a John Whittleman RBI forceout. Lynchburg answered with 2 runs off Elisaul Pimentel. Pimentel settled down from there and the Rocks regained the lead with 3 runs in the 5th on a Nick Van Stratten RBI forceout and 2-run Tim Ferguson double. Pimentel allowed a run in the 6th and allowed the tying run in the 7th before Volz came in. Whit Merrifield and Yem Prades doubled in runs in the 8th and Whittleman singled in a run to make it 7-4 Rocks. Volz retired the last 5 Hillcats to pick up his 1st win as a Rock. Wilmington is 16-25. The series ends Sunday with Tyler Sample starting.

* A scoreless game in the 5th turned into a Cougar win late. Yowill Espinal broke the ice with a 2-run single in the 6th but Wisconsin scratched out a run on Antonio Cruz in the 7th. Angel Franco tripled in a run in the 8th and Brian Fletcher and Jake Kuebler added RBI singles to make it 5-1 KC. Chas Byrne allowed a run in the 9th but got a double play to end the game. KC is 25-16. Jason Adam pitches game 2 Sunday afternoon.

* The Mets got all the ammo they needed in the 1st as they took down the Royals. Eric Cantrell stumbled out of the gate as Kingsport scored 3 runs on 3 hits and a walk in the 1st. The Mets added a run in the 4th and the Royals left a runner at third twice early. Lane Adams drove in a run with a groundout in the 5th but the Royals would get no other runner farther than third. The Mets tacked on an insurance run in the 7th. Burlington is 17-28. Game 2 is Sunday.
